Construction on this vital 637 meter-long railway link began in 1903 and finished in 1908, helping to connect all of western Taiwan by rail. As with most other infrastructure in the area it was heavily damaged in the 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung Earthquake and required extensive repairs. It reopened in 1938 and remained in service until the rest of the Old Mountain Line (舊山線) was decommissioned in 1998. Today it is jointly preserved by the governments of Miaoli and Taichung.
