The first bridge at this location was Dongfeng Bridge (東豐大橋), built in 1933. It was heavily damaged in the 921 Earthquake and eventually demolished. This new, eponymous bridge was completed in 2002, and still features a set of distinctive dragon sculptures (東勢大橋龍馬) originally completed by Yuyu Yang (楊英風) in 1962.
