Dongshan (冬山) is a rural township in central Yilan County originally known as Dongguashan (冬瓜山) after a mountain resembling a winter melon. Traces of Japanese colonial era infrastructure remains evident in heritage sites such as the village office (1929) and Dongguashan Bridge (1930) while post-war history can still be seen in the form of Catholic healthcare facilities including a tuberculosis sanatorium (1959) on Wanshan.
