Dashawan Fort

A Western-style battery established for coastal defense around 1840 and rebuilt in 1876. It was ringed by a stone wall that served as both a blast revetment and a seawall against tidal erosion. French warships knocked it out of commission on August 5th, 1884, at the onset of the Keelung campaign of the Sino-French War. Three fragments of the wall survive, one of them enclosed within a private house: sandstone laid over lime mortar above a rammed-earth base mixed with glutinous rice, which earned it the local nickname “mochi wall” (嘛糬城). Listed as a Keelung historic building in 2007, the remnants now form part of Shawan Historical Culture Park (沙灣歷史文化園區); the site is also known as Dashawan Stone Wall (大沙灣石圍遺構).
