The sole surviving building from a group of three standalone Japanese colonial era officers’ residences in the Shawan (沙灣) area designed by Taiwan Governor-General’s Office architect Asai Shin’ichi (淺井新一). In the post-war era the surrounding area became Jianshi New Village (建實新村), housing staff of Keelung Fortress Command. After residents were relocated in the 2000s the Ministry of National Defense neglected the structures; three paired residences across the street were demolished in 2011 for the Zhongzheng District Office, and one of the two remaining buildings collapsed in a 2013 typhoon. The last remaining dormitory was transferred to the Keelung Cultural Affairs Bureau in 2016. Restoration began in 2018 and the building reopened to the public in 2020 as part of the Shawan Historical and Cultural Park (沙灣歷史文化園區).
