A fortified hilltop battery in central Huxi, the only inland fort in Penghu. The original Dachengbei Battery (大城北砲臺) was built in 1887 under Penghu garrison commander Wu Honglo (吳宏洛) on orders from Governor Liu Mingchuan. It was overrun in March 1895 during the Japanese landing on Penghu, after which the Japanese army surveyed and rebuilt the position as the Gongbei Hill Fortress Battery (拱北山堡壘砲臺) between 1901 and 1907, adding a network of underground tunnels linking the emplacements, barracks, observation posts, magazines, wells, and cisterns. The battery was decommissioned in 1920 but remained largely unaltered through the post-war era and is still managed by the Penghu Defense Command. Despite its national monument status the site sits inside a restricted military zone and is not open to the public.
