Huxi (湖西) occupies the eastern part of the main island of Penghu, east of Magong, and is home to Penghu Airport. Coastal dunes at Guoye (菓葉) hold a late Dabenkeng culture (大坌坑文化) site dated to around 4,800 years ago. Inland, Gongbei Fort is the only fort in Penghu built away from the coast, while the Hongluo Brick Kiln supplied much of the red brick for the archipelago’s construction boom of the 1970s and 1980s.
