Established in 1766 by subprefect Hu Jianwei (胡建偉) and named for the patterned stones (文石) for which the archipelago is known, this is the only Qing dynasty academy ever established in Penghu. A Kuixing Tower (魁星樓) dedicated to the God of Examinations was added behind the academy in 1799 and relocated to its current southeastern corner in 1829. The compound was damaged in the 1885 Sino-French War, pressed into use as a Japanese field hospital after the invasion of 1895, rebuilt as a Confucian temple in 1931, and heavily reconstructed in 1963, after which the Kuixing Tower was all that remained of the original site.
