Completed in 1934, Hsinchu Credit Union (新竹信用組合) is one of several well-preserved Japanese colonial era buildings around the former Hsinchu Prefecture Hall (新竹州廳). It was designed by Japanese architect Shigeo Sumitani (住谷茂夫) and built by Kawamura Senju (河村仙十). In the post-war era it was restructured into Hsinchu First Credit Union (新竹第一信用合作社), which continues to operate today. Additionally, sometime in the post-war era the third storey was added, taking care to adhere to the eclectic style of the original building.
I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
