Designed by Hatakeyama Kisaburō (畠山喜三郎) and completed in April 1935, this two-storey reinforced concrete building originally served as Hsinchu Police Station (新竹警察署). The streamlined corner façade and radial detention block match the style of contemporary police headquarters in Taipei, Taichung, Changhua, and Tainan. Renamed the Hsinchu City Police Station after 1945, the building gained a third storey in 1982 and was reclad in red tile with white trim; only the courtyard side of the detention block retains the original tilework.
