Commissioned in 1881 and erected the following year on the official road north of the former walled city of Hsinchu, this Quanzhou stone arch was built on imperial decree from the Guangxu Emperor to commemorate the filial piety of the merchant Li Xijin (李錫金). It is the only filial son arch (孝子坊) remaining in Taiwan; the others mostly commemorate widowed chastity. Relocated in 1961 to the road approaching Qingcao Lake, the arch was repaired with a column salvaged from the demolished Jiang family memorial arch after one of its original pillars fractured during reassembly.
