Completed in 1926 as the martial arts hall (武道場) of Hsinchu Middle School, this brick and timber structure was built under founding principal Ōki Shunkurō (大木俊九郎), himself a skilled kendōka who personally instructed students. The building features a gambrel roof, red brick walls with buttress columns to distribute roof loads, and arched windows on all four sides for ventilation. After serving as a library in the post-war period it faced demolition to make way for a music hall, but alumni campaigned successfully for its preservation; it was designated a city monument in 2001 and restored in 2021. It is the only surviving Japanese colonial era kendo hall in Taiwan.
