:format(jpg)/taiwan/taipei/beitou/beitou-zhou-family-memorial-archway-1.jpg)
One of three Qing dynasty archways in Taipei. It honors Zhou Juan (周絹), a native of Tamsui who married into the Chen family in Beitou. She was widowed at age 27 and never remarried, which led to the construction of this memorial gate in 1861. It was heavily damaged in an earthquake and reduced in size. The most recent restoration effort was completed in 1993. This site is more widely known as Lady Zhou’s Memorial Gate in English.
