Established in 1821 by Qing dynasty soldiers to honour Dongyue Dadi (東嶽大帝), the Great Emperor of the Eastern Peak, this temple near Hsinchu East Gate also venerates Kshitigarbha (地藏王菩薩), bodhisattva of the underworld. It was reduced to ruins during the Kōminka movement and rebuilt between 1950 and 1952 under a new name invoking Koxinga, reportedly to secure government approval. It also hosts several deities from now-demolished temples around the city.
