A memorial park dedicated to the 228 Incident in Chiayi City. It opened in 1996 on a former military camp to commemorate the 1947 uprising and its aftermath, which was among the most violent in southern Taiwan. Armed militias seized the nearby airfield but once KMT troops arrived on the scene several prominent figures, among them painter Chen Cheng-po (陳澄波), were executed without trial at the railway station. Prompted by victims’ families, mayor Chang Wen-ying (張文英) established the park around Chiayi 228 Memorial Hall (嘉義市二二八紀念館), the first museum dedicated to the incident. The original Chiayi 228 Memorial Monument (嘉義市二二八紀念碑), erected in 1989 as the very first 228 monument in Taiwan, was also relocated here due to a road widening project in 2017.
