Approved for development in 1938 and completed in 1943 as Beigangzi Saltworks (北港子採鹵鹽田) in rural Budai, Chiayi. In the post-war era it was incorporated into the Budai Saltworks as No. 8 Production Area (第八生產區). After the cessation of domestic salt production in the 2000s the saltworks facilities were abandoned. In the late 2010s it was redeveloped into the Vena Energy Chiayi Yizhu Solar Power Plant (韋能能源嘉義義竹電廠). Although not discernible from the surface the solar panels have been arranged to form the outline of a spoonbill when viewed from above. Traces of the original pump stations and warehouses of the saltworks can still be found scattered around the site in addition to the ruins of an office.
