Lai Ching-te (賴清德), president of Taiwan from 2024 onward, grew up in a small mining community in Wanli, a rural district on the north coast. His childhood home still exists, albeit renovated over the years to improve conditions for whichever relatives continued living there after he left.

In the run-up to the presidential election in 2024 Lai’s old house became a source of controversy as media figures and opposition forces claimed some or all of the house was constructed illegally. The details seem obscure and unclear, but all can agree that this is not a luxury home. In any case, Lai pledged to turn his old house into a small to the life of miners in the area (礦工生活紀念館), though this has yet to be realized as of September 2024.
