Established in 1936 as Kokusai-kan (國際館), this luxurious air-conditioned theater was a mainstay of Ximending for decades. Initially it was directly operated by Toho Pictures (東宝映畫), the famous Japanese film company. It was renamed after the war and, after some changes in ownership structure, was controlled by the KMT as a subsidiary of the state-owned Central Motion Picture Corporation (中影公司) until it was sold and demolished in 1970. It was replaced by the iconic Wannian Building (萬年大樓), which opened in 1973.
