Toucheng Jiangjun Temple (頭城新建里將軍廟) - Spectral Codex
頭城新建里將軍廟

A small temple in Toucheng venerating General Cat (貓將軍), one of few cases in Taiwan of a monster becoming the principal deity of a temple. Around 1875 a cat spirit terrorized Fudekeng (福德坑), killing livestock, spreading disease, and causing villagers to behave like cats. Through a spirit medium it demanded a temple in exchange for ceasing its attacks and protecting the village. The original shrine was burned by Japanese soldiers in 1896 and later destroyed by flooding in 1924; the cat deity’s statue was recovered downstream and re-enshrined at the present site in Xinjian Village.
