黃忠林招財英勇救人事蹟紀念碑

A memorial to Privates Huang Chung (黃忠) and Lin Chao-tsai (林招財), two 20-year-old conscripts on coastal guard duty who drowned on September 26th, 1982, while trying to rescue a student swept out from Shalun Beach (沙崙海水浴場) in coastal Tamsui. The beach had closed for the season, yet more than 3,000 bathers ignored the soldiers’ orders to leave that day. The town office erected this plain slab in 1984, and its inscription records the student as saved, whereas contemporary newspaper and army accounts list him as missing or drowned. It was long behind a partition and could not be visited by the public but since the surrounding park has been renovated it may now be accessible.
