Originally established by wealthy businessman Wu Shangxin (吳尚新) in 1829 as Zichun Garden (紫春園). It was widely considered to be one of four great classical Chinese gardens in Taiwan (台灣四大名園). The Wu family fell on hard times in the early Japanese colonial period and parts of the garden were repurposed for use in building Tainan Public Hall (臺南公會堂).
