Dongping Theater (東平戲院) was established in 1954 by Xiao Dongping (蕭冬平), director of a hospital of the same name, Dongping Hospital (東平醫院). It was designed in an understated modernist style with hints of Art Deco and could accommodate 1,000 audience members. It went out of business around 1983 but the ground floor continues to host small shops and the Dongping Medical Clinic (東平診所). This is the only early post-war theater directly on Zhonghua Road (中華路) not renovated or demolished, although apparently nothing of interest remains inside.
The former Dongping Theater from across the street.
A closer look at the façade. Above the Chinese characters one can faintly discern “Tong Ping”, a romanization of the name, and to the left is a glyph representing the character Dong (東).
Note the vaulted rooftop peeking out from behind the façade.
Plaques for two generations of health clinics can be seen out front.
