A private museum of Indigenous culture and history in front of the National Palace Museum in Shilin, Taipei, opened in June 1994 with funding from the Shung Ye Group (順益集團). Its collections and exhibitions follow anthropological principles across four themes: people and the natural environment, daily life and implements, dress and culture, and belief and ritual. The building takes its form from the dwellings of Indigenous peoples rather than, as is often assumed, a Tao helmet, and its ground-floor walls are faced in shale, a nod to the traditional stone slab house.
