Remnants of a police garrison, likely known as Matsubara (松原) after the surrounding pines, set just above the 7.8 kilometer mark of the Nenggao Crossing Trail at about 2,600 meters in Ren’ai, Nantou, between Yunhai Line Maintenance Station and Tianchi Lodge. It was established in 1931, a year after the Wushe Incident (霧社事件), to tighten surveillance of nearby Indigenous communities. Overgrown stone platforms, walls, steps, and a cistern survive amid scattered sake bottles, and a charcoal kiln that supplied the garrison lies about 150 meters to the east, though nothing on the trail marks the site.
