Built in 1935 as the Keelung works of the Taiwan Denka Company (臺灣電化株式會社), this electrochemical plant produced calcium cyanamide fertilizer and was heavily bombed during World War 2. Taken over after the war, it became the No. 1 Factory of the state-run Taiwan Fertilizer Company, supplying much of the island’s nitrogen fertilizer along with calcium carbide, oxygen, and lime; its factory shrine and a workers’ cinema once stood on the grounds. The plant ceased operations at the end of 2014, decades after its sister No. 2 Factory across the harbour.
