Completed in 1902 by the Imperial Japanese Army as part of Keelung Fortress (基隆要塞), this coastal battery once mounted four 8-inch Armstrong guns covering the western approach to Keelung Harbour alongside Wanrentou Fort and Mushan Fort. It was also nicknamed Holland Castle (荷蘭城), possibly after a 17th century Dutch outpost or a Hokkien mispronunciation of “Hunan”, the home province of Qing dynasty era garrison troops once stationed nearby. Decommissioned after 1957 and restored from 2020 to 2022, the site now operates as a free public park connected by walking trails to the adjacent Keelung Lighthouse.
