Japanese colonial era worker housing built for the Kanegafuchi Soda Plant (鐘淵曹達工業株式會社台南工場), an alkali-chlorine factory established in 1938 that produced caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, and bromine for the Japanese Navy. After the war the plant was taken over by the Taiwan Salt Company (台鹼) and later merged into CPC (中石化), becoming infamous for severe dioxin and mercury contamination before closing in 1982. The dormitories have been largely abandoned, though the area briefly gained online notoriety as Tainan Cat Village (台南貓村).
