Wushulin Sugar Factory

Established in 1909 as the second factory of Tōyō Sugar (東洋製糖株式會社), with a daily crushing capacity of 750 tonnes. It passed to Meiji Sugar (明治製糖株式會社) when Tōyō was broken up in 1927, after which capacity was raised to 1,600 tonnes. Damaged by bombing in the closing months of World War 2, it was repaired quickly enough to resume milling in January 1946 and continued under Taiwan Sugar Corporation until closing in 1983, when the mill was decommissioned and production was consolidated at Xinying Sugar Factory. The grounds now hold an orchid nursery and a leisure park centered on Wushulin Railway Station, where a sightseeing train runs out along a surviving stretch of the sugar railway. It is one of the more popular of the sugar factories redeveloped for tourism.
