Established in 1922 as Gakubutai (樂舞臺), the first theater in rural Tainan, this was an early venue for traditional opera and performance with a capacity of 350. Owned and operated by Chen Yingcha (陳按察). Out of business or destroyed in the early post-war era, around 1946, although apparently it had already changed its name to Dongshan Theater (東山戲院). This name would be reused by a second theater in the same town in the 1960s.
