東山區農會日式碾米廠

A three-storey timber rice mill in Dongshan, Tainan, built in 1934 by the Fanshe Credit Union (番社信用組合), the body that became Dongshan Farmers’ Association after the war. It was built as the colonial government was steering rice husking away from the small independent tulongjian (土礱間) workshops and towards cooperatives it could inspect and, from 1939, requisition from directly. It was designated a historic building in 2005 and restored in 2016. The milling machinery inside is intact and almost entirely wooden apart from the hulling drum and blowers, with a later generator the only substitution, and can be seen by appointment with the farmers’ association.
