Xiajiadong Jingzhong Temple

A temple to Yuefu Yuanshuai (岳府元帥), the deified Song dynasty general Yue Fei (岳飛), in a traditional settlement in Houbi, Tainan. Together with Tai’an Temple (泰安宮) it anchors a religious alliance of thirty-six villages across the district. The building collapsed in the Zhongpu Earthquake (中埔地震) of December 1941 and, with rebuilding barred under the temple restructuring campaign of the Kōminka movement (皇民化運動), served as a public assembly hall until villagers formed a reconstruction committee in 1961. Completed in 1967, the temple was designed by Chiayi carpenter Chen Zhuanlin (陳專琳) alongside the Tainan masters Xu Tonglu (許銅爐) and Xu Hanzhen (許漢珍). The rebuilt temple pairs reinforced concrete columns with timber roof framing, a combination typical of post-war temple construction in Taiwan, and it was registered as a historic building in 2025.
