One of six connected wooden townhouses built in 1950 by Chen Congming (陳聰明), a former Alishan Forest Railway conductor working at the nearby Beimen Station. It was converted to a hotel upon his retirement in 1966 and later fell dormant before being revived as a backpacker hostel and café in 2009. Unfortunately the row of shophouses suffered a catastrophic blaze in March 2022; the site was subsequently sold and its future remains uncertain, but demolition is almost certainly inevitable.
Outside the converted hotel. If you look closely you’ll be able to discern the name of the hotel in fading red paint above the window.
The lobby of the café is a paradise of vintage Taiwan memorabilia.

Plaque over the entrance of the old hotel.
A closer look at a bamboo wall beneath the roof.
The hotel was destroyed by fire in March 2022.
The skeletal remains of the hotel’s upper levels can be seen at top right.
I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
