An extensive complex of 29 restored Japanese colonial era dormitories built between 1914 and 1943 for staff of the Taiwan Governor-General’s Forestry Bureau. Originally known as Hinoki-machi (檜町), the district developed alongside the Alishan timber industry. Registered as historic buildings in 2005, restored by 2013, and now operating as Taiwan’s first forest-themed cultural park and one of Chiayi’s most popular tourist attractions.
