A large performance venue established as Minami-za in January 1921 on Hongmaojing Street with seating for 2,000. The opening run featured actors from Shanghai and played to full houses for three months. A second-generation two-storey building was constructed slightly southwest of the original around 1931. This was Shinminami-za (新南座), later known as Kokumin-gekijō (國民劇場). It was replaced by the more modern Guomin Theater (國民戲院) in the post-war era.
