The last of three horse racing venues built in Chiayi City during the Japanese colonial era, opened in 1938 at Houhu (後湖) north of the city center after the earlier course at Horikawa-chō (堀川町) proved too small. Its 1,600 meter track met the minimum required by the racing ordinance that took effect the same year. The racecourse was dismantled after the war and most of the site is now Houhu Industrial Park. No trace remains except for the pattern of buildings at the east end of the former racetrack.
