Chiayi Bajiang River Ferry

A stone stele erected in 1847 marks a former ferry crossing on the Bazhang River, historically written Bajiang (八獎溪), on the southern edge of Chiayi City. In that year, late in the Qing dynasty era, local gentry bought farmland and used the rental income to pay boatmen, replacing private ferries known for arbitrary fares with a free service. A wire suspension bridge superseded the ferry in 1923 and was later dismantled, although remnants can still be found at the site.
