One of the three great Mazu temples in Taiwan alongside Beigang Chaotian Temple and Lukang Tianhou Temple, and the oldest in the north. A temple on this site dates to at least 1712, when it was built atop a hill by a local interpreter for the Indigenous Ketagalan community; it was relocated to its current riverside position in 1897 by a wealthy local who purchased the hilltop land for his own residence. The sprawling complex includes a long underground tunnel lined with Buddhist carvings known as the Ancient Buddha Cave (古佛洞).
