This area was originally a hot springs retreat for Japanese police officers. In the post-war era it was occupied by ROC troops and one of the main dormitories was repurposed for the ongoing house arrest of famous Chinese general Zhang Xueliang (or Chang Hsueh-liang), who was imprisoned here in Taoshan Village (桃山村) from 1946 until 1957. The house was destroyed in Typhoon Gloria in 1963. In 2008 it was rebuilt on the west side of the stream but additional funding provided for the reconstruction of the residence near its original location on the east side of the village in 2011.
