Established in October 1923, this was one of only two government-sanctioned Shinto shrines (官幣中社) in Taiwan, and second in importance only to Taipei-jinja. In the post-war period it was repurposed for use as a Chinese martyrs’ shrine. It was demolished in 1969 and the site was later used to build Tainan Municipal Stadium (臺南市立體育館). This, in turn, was demolished in 1991, and the lands of the former Shinto shrine are now occupied by Zhongyi Elementary School (忠義國小) and the Tainan Museum of Art (臺南市美術館二館).
