Taichung Wanchun Temple (台中萬春宮) - Spectral Codex

Historic Mazu temple in downtown Taichung, formerly known as Lanxing Temple (藍興宮). According to temple tradition, the Mazu image was brought from Meizhou (湄洲) in 1721 by Qing general Lan Tingzhen (藍廷珍) on the eve of his campaign against the Zhu Yigui (朱一貴) rebellion and enshrined in Dadun (大墩) in 1723, making it one of the earliest Han Chinese temples in the region. The temple was damaged in the Lin Shuangwen (林爽文) uprising, rebuilt by 1789, and renamed Wanchun (萬春宮) in 1824. Under Japanese rule it was taken over by the Jōdo Shinshū Honganji sect and soon repurposed as a girls’ school, inaugurating modern women’s education in Taichung, before being rebuilt on the current site in 1947.
