The earliest theater and performance venue operating in Taichung can trace its history back to Taichū-za (臺中座), originally established in 1902. It was rebuilt several times to accommodate larger crowds and changing needs, finally in 1937 when it was relocated to a plot of land next to what is now Taiwan Boulevard (台灣大道). In these days it primarily catered to the Japanese population of Taichung. After the war it was renamed and nationalized by the KMT. It closed in 1977 and was demolished soon thereafter, making space for the construction of what would become Longxin Department Store (龍心百貨).
