With the growing US Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) presence in Taiwan in the late 1950s the New Compound, as it was informally known, was established in Tuku Village (土庫里) in West District, Taichung. Constructed by the Bank of Taiwan (臺灣銀行), it provided official housing for US military officers and their families starting from around 1959, contrasting with the Old Compound, which housed NCOs in North District. The area also came equipped with tennis courts, baseball fields, a clubhouse, and a swimming pool, the latter of which is still in operation.
Over the years since the American withdrawal from Taiwan in 1979 most of these homes and facilities have been demolished and redeveloped into high-rises but two of the original bungalows remain occupied as private residences and at least one more is left abandoned.
Also known by various other names in Mandarin Chinese such as Tuku Village US Military Village (土庫里美軍眷村).
