A deep-sea fishing port in Qieding built at great cost to relieve congestion at the older port in Qianzhen, Kaohsiung, only for distant-water fishing to decline soon after. Several hundred million more went into recasting part of it as Lover’s Wharf (情人碼頭), a leisure destination that a 2010 survey of mosquito halls found almost deserted, its shops shuttered and its go-kart track abandoned. Much of the surrounding land now lies barren, with old vessels discarded in empty lots and what may once have been a fish market standing derelict.
