The Governor-General’s Office dredged this port at Bachimen (八尺門) between 1929 and 1934 to move the fishing fleet out of the commercial harbour. It opened as Keelung Fishing Port (基隆漁港), the largest in northern Taiwan at the time, and the main export point for copper ore from the mines of Jinguashi (金瓜石). The present name combines the zheng (正) of Zhongzheng District with the bin (濱) of Hamachō (濱町), the colonial ward on the facing shore. Deep-water trawlers and longliners still work out of the port, though a row of houses along the quay painted in bright colours (彩色街屋) now draws most of its visitors.
