Built by the French Foreign Legion during the occupation of Keelung in the Sino-French War, Fort Bertin extended the French line south from the heights above the port to overlook the Keelung River and the inland approaches to the city. It takes its name from Captain Simon Roger Bertin, an officer stationed here; Joseph Joffre, later commander-in-chief of the French army in World War 1, also served at the position. Only faint traces of the position remain along a scenic hiking trail nowadays.
