In 1914 the Japanese colonial authorities established a slaughterhouse on the south side of Keelung in what was later known as Takigawa-chō (瀧川町). In 1933 an impressive 6 meter-tall monument was erected to honor the animals who gave their lives for human consumption. In the post-war era the slaughterhouse was relocated deeper into the mountains as urban sprawl pushed at the boundaries of the city. This monument was eventually dismantled and a small replacement was erected in 1976 at Nanrong Public Cemetery (南榮公墓). Whether any fragments of the original remain is unclear, but it seems like a small stone marker might remain at the former site of the slaughterhouse in Yingren Village (英仁里).
