Dongshi Social Hall

A social education venue completed in 1937 immediately north of Dongshi Public Hall and the Dongshi Loyalty Monument. No other structure with this exact name seems to be known so there’s a chance it was unique to this settlement, or perhaps it points to a lack of research into this class of colonial institution. Only the spire (尖塔) survives, locally known in the post-war era as Zhongshan Tower (中山塔) after the elementary school that stood opposite until the 921 Earthquake. It is now part of a private residence built on state land by demobilized soldiers. In March 2024 the occupants were found to have painted over the brickwork and cut a hole through the base, prompting the Hakka Affairs Council to press Taichung for a heritage designation that was previously denied.
