Changhua is home to many of the remaining offices of the Japanese colonial era hokō system of community policing and social control. This particular example, situated in the former river port of Beidou, was constructed in a traditional wooden style in 1936. Its post-war history is somewhat of a mystery but it was designated a heritage property in 2009 and fully restored from 2013 to 2016. Part of the office was demolished for a road widening project and it seems the restoration effort adhered to this modification. It wasn’t open when I visited in 2024 but appears to be used for occasional community events.
