One of two structures surviving from the original Yilan Prison, one of the very first structures built after the Japanese conquest of Taiwan. This gatehouse was built in 1896 and served as the warden’s office and administrative entrance until the prison relocated in 1999. It was registered as a historic building in 2001 and restored the following year while most of the rest of the prison was redeveloped into Lanyang Plaza (蘭城新月廣場). The gatehouse was converted into Yilan Blue House (宜蘭藍屋), an upscale restaurant, in 2008.
