Established in 1921 by Japanese businessman Yoichi Otsubo (大坪與一), Takao-gekijō was a performance located in the Horié-chō (堀江町) neighborhood. This theater was long considered the city’s first cinema, though earlier venues such as Takao-za (打狗座) predated it by over a decade. It was formally renamed Takao-kan (高雄館) in 1931. It was located at the intersection of what is now Wufu Road and Qixian Road in Yancheng and was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War 2. The site was later reused for the construction of Dongzhou Theater (亞洲戲院).
